We've recently switched our payment processor from PayPal to Authorize.net. I'm currently trying to refund a customer who's original transaction was processed by PayPal.

Is it possible to refund them through Authorize.net, or perhaps just send them the funds? Or do I need to find another way to do this?

Yes, you can do Unlinked Credit

and you need to signup to do it.

http://developer.authorize.net/faqs/#diffcredits

Hmmm, according to that form, we'll need a processing history greater than 120 days with authorize.net which unfortunately doesn't apply to us. Am I out of luck here?

EDIT: And thank you for the quick reply!

the 2nd paragraph

An unlinked credit is not linked to a previous Charge transaction processed through Authorize.Net, and has no date or amount restrictions. In order to process unlinked Credits, merchants must apply for Expanded Credit Capabilities (ECC)

by completing and submitting the ECC Application to Authorize.Net.

Oh I see, I was a bit confused. When I was reading the application and saw "ECC can only be provided to accounts with a transaction processing history greater than 120 days", I thought it meant we had to have used authorize.net for 120 days. I'll just need a statement from PayPal and then I should be able to submit the application and get approved right?

Thanks for your help!
