Github Pages Help

I have been trying to set up a github pages page using the minimal-mistakes jekyll template. I tried to fork the repo and then make changes as well as tried to do the remote theme method, but I’m having trouble getting it to load correctly or even finish publishing without getting stuck on the “ready to publish at …” link. Could anyone help me with a step by step? I’m VERY new to this and the guide posted for this theme hasn’t worked (I’m sure I’m messing something up).
