SMS (Short Message Service) is a text messaging service that allows for the sending of short messages (up to 160 characters in length) between mobile phones. Typically, SMS messages are sent using a short code, which is a special 5 or 6 digit number that is assigned by a mobile network operator or SMS service provider.

However, it is also possible to send SMS messages without using a short code. In this case, the SMS message is sent from a regular 10-digit phone number (also known as a long code). Long codes are essentially regular phone numbers that are used for SMS messaging, rather than voice calls.

Sending SMS messages using a long code can be useful for businesses or individuals who want to send messages to a smaller number of recipients or who want to have more control over the messaging process. However, using a long code can also be more time-consuming and expensive than using a short code, especially for larger-scale messaging campaigns.

If one was to accept payment via old timey sms texting could it be done without a short code [premium number]? but use a long number (as is assigned to a phone) instead?

Or could one use a voip provider with SMSC to receive something from an app passing it to URL

phone app -> old timey sms texting -> itsp -> URL

Where URL is authorize.net based?

If yes then app could also use xmpp texting
