Testing confusion

So I see some docs saying that to test an API integration I should register for a sandbox account and put that info ( API Login ID, Transaction Key, and Client Key) in the code and test it that way.

Then I see right in my control panel in my live account, there is a Transaction Processing switch I can set to "test" and it says what I quote below. This seems to be WAY easier and I eliminate things like mistyping the server to connect to in my code, etc etc etc. It stands to reason that testing with live real code is always better than using a sandbox. The problem is, I cant seem to get anything other than a "[E00027] The transaction was unsuccessful."

I also can not find online documentation for using this method. Am I blind?

While your account is in Test Mode you may:
  • Confirm that you are successfully connected to the payment gateway
  • Check that your API Login ID and Transaction Key are correct
  • For more information, refer to Reference & User Guides
To process live transactions switch your account to LIVE"
