createTransactionRequest vs. createCustomerProfileTransactionRequest

There appear to be two different fuctions to charge an existing Customer profile, which are createTransactionRequest and createCustomerProfileTransactionRequest.  I cannot make createCustomerProfileTransactionRequest work.  Should I use one over the other ?  Thanks.
