Passing a zero dollar value?

In some cases I would like to offer customers a coupon code to allow customers a FREE product however I cannot get Authorize.net to allow and accept the $0 dollar value. Has anyone else experience this problem any methods, tips or solutions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

Is there a reason why you would want to charge them? Maybe to show in your merchant account? 

1.- Check if the amount is $0.00 and don't even attempt a transaction.

2.- You can try an authorization for $0.01 and then void it or let it expire in 30 days.  I've seen charges on my CC statement that never settle.

There might be other options as well.

Yeah, even with zero dollar amount, you will pay a transaction fee.
